WoW Forever Warlock Guide: Builds, Roles and Leveling
Our WoW Forever Warlock guide covers Affliction, Demonology and Destruction, all ranged damage specs: what changed, builds, races and fitting professions. We note how sure we are about each point, because Forever launches on 4 November 2026 and much of what we know comes from Blizzard's class deep dive and the beta notes.

Warlock at a Glance
Every Warlock spec deals ranged damage. Warlocks do not heal or tank, though Blizzard says a pet can tank in some setups. No source names a best spec, so the table shows confirmed roles, not winners.
| Spec | Role | Scenarios | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affliction | Ranged damage | Dungeons and raids; solo and PvP untested | Drain sustain points toward solo play, but nothing is proven; adjusted on 15 October. |
| Demonology | Ranged damage with a pet focus | Dungeons and raids; solo and PvP untested | The only tree with all four milestone talents named, so the easiest to plan. |
| Destruction | Ranged damage | Dungeons and raids; solo and PvP untested | Conflagrate at 16 points and Incinerate at 31; adjusted on 15 October. |
What Changed in Forever
Blizzard says Forever is not a version of Classic, and the Warlock's curses, pets and trees all changed.
- Talents were redesigned (confirmed by Blizzard). Talents start at level 10. Each tree has one point milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new milestone at 16 points. Some talents are unchanged, and others were moved, merged, removed or made baseline.
- Banes (confirmed by Blizzard). Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Banes, and each Warlock can keep one Bane on a target. Plan around one Bane per target, not both.
- Curses (confirmed by Blizzard). Curse of Shadows was removed, and Curse of the Elements now covers all magic schools.
- Imbues (confirmed by Blizzard). Firestone and Spellstone are weapon imbues, and they stack with stones and oils.
- Pets scale with you (confirmed by Blizzard). Your gear upgrades also strengthen your demon. Summoning a new demon stuns the one you have out, and the Incubus is a new pet option (seen in beta, may change at launch).
- Soul Shards and Life Tap (confirmed by Blizzard). Drain Soul guarantees a Soul Shard progressively, and Life Tap scales with Spirit.
- Affliction (confirmed by Blizzard, tuned in beta). Curse of Exhaustion is the 16 point talent and Wrack, a drain, is the 31 point talent. The 15 October notes brought back Grim Reach and removed Malediction and Dark Pact, so the Classic deep Affliction route through Dark Pact is gone.
- Demonology (confirmed by Blizzard). Demonic Sacrifice is the 11 point talent and now lasts 2 hours. Fel Domination is the 16 point talent, Soul Link the 21 point talent, and Demonic Pact the 31 point talent, which keeps the sacrifice buff while another demon is out. Demonic Brand and Demonic Knowledge are also in the tree.
- Destruction (confirmed by Blizzard, tuned in beta). Conflagrate is the 16 point talent, Bane of Havoc the 21 point talent and Incinerate the 31 point talent, with Shadow and Flame in the tree. The 15 October notes changed Destructive Reach so that it only adds range to Destruction spells.
- Ranks and wands (seen in beta). Shadow Bolt was reflowed so that every new rank is an upgrade, and a down-ranking penalty cuts the value of spells far below your level. Wands get no bonus from spell damage and need you to stand still for half a second.
- New race (confirmed by Blizzard). Trolls can now be Warlocks.
- Stats were merged (confirmed by Blizzard). Spell, melee and ranged hit are one stat, and so is crit. Bonus healing also grants a third as much bonus damage, and caster weapons carry both.
Specs and Roles
Affliction
Affliction is damage over time, built on Banes, curses and drains, with Curse of Exhaustion at 16 points and Wrack at 31. Its 11 and 21 point talents are not named in our sources.
Demonology
Demonology puts the pet at the center. Demonic Pact at 31 points lets you keep the 2 hour Demonic Sacrifice buff with another demon out, so you no longer choose between the buff and a pet. Demonic Brand gives the Voidwalker high threat shadow attacks.
Destruction
Destruction is direct damage through Conflagrate, Bane of Havoc and Incinerate. Its 11 point talent is not named in our sources.
Best Builds by Scenario
Exact point layouts are not safe to publish yet: the beta adjusted Affliction and Destruction on 15 October. Each section says which way the evidence points and what to look for in the launch trees.
Solo Leveling
Blizzard has not named a best leveling spec. Classic leveling advice favored Affliction for pet assisted questing and sustain, and Forever gives that some support: Affliction gains drain sustain, pets scale with your stats, and Demonology keeps an active pet while sacrificed. Nobody has shown which spec levels fastest.
What to look for:
- Sustain talents. Drains and Life Tap are your mana and health engine, and Life Tap now scales with Spirit.
- Your own gear first. Pets scale with your stats, so a gear upgrade helps both of you.
- No mid fight demon swaps. Summoning stuns your current pet, so pick the demon before the pull.
- Current ranks, fewer wand finishes. Train every Shadow Bolt rank, and expect less from a wand now that it ignores spell damage.
- Controlled pulls. Let your pet take the first hits, apply your damage over time, and keep the fight to one enemy where you can.
Dungeon Damage
Which spec is best in dungeons is unknown. Curse of the Elements now covers every magic school, which makes it a group curse worth bringing. Forever keeps crowd control and threat in dungeons, so let the tank build threat and watch your Life Tap use against the healer's mana. A Voidwalker with Demonic Brand gains threat, which can help a short handed group, but tanking is not a Warlock player role.
Beta dungeons at the level 30 cap included Wailing Caverns, Blackfathom Deeps, Razorfen Kraul and Uldaman, plus new dungeons such as Ruins of Lordaeron and City of Dalaran.
PvP
The best PvP spec is unknown, and our sources name no Warlock PvP strengths or weaknesses. Expect Horde Orcs to dispel your Curses and Banes with Shatter Curse (seen in beta). The beta notes also say PvP crits are no longer reduced. Forever's PvP has Honor, seasonal Rank Points with a weekly cap, and the new 15 versus 15 Darkspear Islands battleground for levels 30 to 60 (confirmed by Blizzard).
Raids
Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players and the Barrow Deeps for 10 players at maximum level (confirmed by Blizzard). The best raid spec is unknown. Curse of the Elements covering all schools and the one Bane rule will shape how raids assign Warlocks, but no Forever raid encounter has been tested. Dual spec at 40 lets you keep a leveling build and a group build.
Leveling Milestones
| Level | What Happens | How Sure |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 12 | Start in your race's classic starting zone; the beta notes fixed quests in all six | Seen in beta |
| 10 | First talent point | Confirmed |
| 30 | The beta's level cap since 1 October; nothing above it was tested | Seen in beta |
| 40 | Dual spec | Confirmed |
| 40 | Riding at 60% speed, with a mount granted when you train | Mount model confirmed; level and speed datamined |
| 60 | Level cap; raids open 9 December | Confirmed |
Our sources give no new Warlock spell levels and no levels for the demon quests, so check your trainer at each level rather than relying on Classic timings. Blizzard has not said how many talent points you get per level. Third party tools assume one per level from 10, which would put the 16 point milestone at 25, the 21 point milestone at 30 and the 31 point milestone at 40. The Legacy perk Talented grants talent points up to five levels early (confirmed by Blizzard). Respecs cost 1 silver on the beta only; at launch the cost rises after the first reset and decays over time (seen in beta).
Races
Warlock race options, from a third party race and class matrix that agrees with Blizzard's announcements:
- Alliance: Human and Gnome.
- Horde: Orc, Undead and Troll (new in Forever).
Skyborne cannot be Warlocks. The classic starting zones remain, including Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Durotar and Tirisfal Glades.
Each race has two active and two passive racials, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value (confirmed by Blizzard). The 15 October beta notes list these, which may change at launch:
- Human: Ruthless (+2% crit) and Will to Survive.
- Gnome: Eureka!, an 8 second buff that makes mana, rage and energy abilities 10% cheaper.
- Orc: Savage (+1% crit), Blood Fury on a 3 minute cooldown, Shatter Curse, which dispels Curses and Banes, and a passive that cuts magic damage taken by 5%.
- Undead: Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep without granting immunity, and Cannibalize restores mana as well as health (both confirmed by Blizzard). Touch of the Grave has a damage proc called Touch of the Dead.
- Troll: Regeneration is 20% stronger.
No source shows a race that changes Warlock results, so pick the faction and look you want.
Professions That Fit
Our suggested pair for a Warlock is Tailoring and Enchanting, and it still works as a starting plan, with a budget for two crafts. See the Warlock professions section for more.
- Camping and Spirit. Each profession has three campfire objects that give a one hour buff, starting at profession skill 20. The Tailor's Faction Banner gives Spirit (confirmed by Blizzard), and Life Tap now scales with Spirit. Camp buffs do not stack with the matching class buffs.
- Check vendor values. Crafted items sell to vendors for less, and Enchanting wands now sell for a few copper or silver (seen in beta). Compare disenchanting, selling and vendoring before you consume loot.
- Imbues still leave room for oils. Firestone and Spellstone stack with stones and oils (confirmed by Blizzard).
- Classic cooldowns are unverified. Mooncloth and the Classic profession specializations have no Forever source yet, so do not plan a business around them.
- Legacy can help. The Reagent Economy perk makes class reagents free (confirmed by Blizzard).
What We Do Not Know Yet
- The 11 and 21 point Affliction talents and the 11 point Destruction talent.
- Final talent layouts and numbers, after the 15 October changes to Affliction and Destruction.
- Which spec is best for leveling, dungeons, PvP or raids.
- What the Incubus does and when you get it, and the levels of the demon quests.
- How quickly Drain Soul reaches a guaranteed shard.
- Talent points per level, the respec gold cost and the riding gold cost.
- How levels 31 to 60 play, since the beta stopped at 30.
- Whether Mooncloth and the Classic profession specializations exist in Forever.
Item stats on our Forever database pages are Classic Era copies and are not reliable for Forever, since Blizzard reworked dungeon loot. Classic best in slot lists do not apply.
Forever is new, and we update this page as launch details are confirmed. For the wider picture, see the WoW Forever hub, the leveling guide and the Forever map, or read the Mage and Druid guides.
