WoW Forever Mage Guide: Builds, Roles and Leveling

Our WoW Forever Mage guide explains Arcane, Fire and Frost, all ranged damage specs: what changed from Classic, builds by scenario, races and professions. We say how sure we are about each point, because Forever launches on 4 November 2026 and much of what we know comes from Blizzard's class deep dive and the beta notes.

Mage at a Glance

Every Mage spec deals ranged damage; Blizzard confirms Mages do not tank or heal. No source names a best spec for any activity, so the table shows confirmed roles, not winners.

What Changed in Forever

Blizzard says Forever is not a version of Classic, and the Mage shows it.

  • Talents were redesigned (confirmed by Blizzard). Talents start at level 10. Each tree has one point milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new milestone at 16 points. Some talents are unchanged, and others were moved, merged, removed or made baseline.
  • Frostfire Bolt at level 40 (confirmed by Blizzard). It counts as both Fire and Frost, which opens the door to hybrid builds.
  • Frost Blast at level 24 (seen in beta, may change at launch). A new down-ranking penalty means spells far below your level get less from spell power and a lower chance to trigger class effects. Rank 1 Frostbolt at 60 has no chance to apply Frostbite, so the Classic Rank 1 Frostbolt slow is gone, and Frost Blast replaces it.
  • AoE farming was deliberately weakened (confirmed by Blizzard). Cone of Cold is shorter, and Improved Blizzard's slow is capped at 40%. Blizzard named gold farmers and boosters as the reason. The latest beta notes add that Cone of Cold hits harder on its first four targets.
  • Arcane (seen in beta, may change at launch). Arcane Blast was redesigned after the deep dive: a 1.5 second cast that stacks spell damage drawn from your Intellect for 15 seconds. Arcane Wrath is the 16 point talent, and Missile Barrage moved to the first row.
  • Fire (seen in beta, may change at launch). Heating Up changes Pyroblast's cast time, each Mage has their own Ignite, Combustion has three charges, Critical Mass goes up to five points, and Fire Power was reworked. Wake of Fire went back to being Improved Fire Blast.
  • Frost (confirmed by Blizzard, tuned in beta). Ice Lance is the 11 point talent, Ice Block the 16 point talent and Cold Snap the 21 point talent, on a 10 minute cooldown. Fingers of Frost is in the tree. The 15 October notes give Ice Lance a 200% bonus against frozen targets and rework Winter's Chill to strengthen Cone of Cold.
  • Ranks and wands (seen in beta). Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles were reflowed so that every new rank is an upgrade. Wands get no bonus from spell damage and need you to stand still for half a second, so the Classic habit of finishing kills with a wand is weaker.
  • New Mage systems. Comprehension is a new Mage only minor tradeskill for reading scrolls that creatures drop (confirmed by Blizzard). Research is a new Mage system, and a Scroll of Liminal Passage exists; what each does is unknown (seen in beta).
  • New races (confirmed by Blizzard). Orcs can now be Mages, and Alliance Skyborne get the class.
  • Stats were merged (confirmed by Blizzard). Spell, melee and ranged hit are one stat, and so is crit. Bonus healing also grants a third as much bonus damage, and caster weapons carry both.

Specs and Roles

Arcane

Arcane is built around the redesigned Arcane Blast and Arcane Wrath at 16 points. It changed the most after the deep dive and its 31 point talent is unnamed, so treat any Arcane build you see today as provisional.

Fire

Fire leans on critical strikes through Heating Up, Combustion and Critical Mass. Its 11, 21 and 31 point talents are not named in any source we have.

Frost

Frost has the strongest defensive kit we can confirm, with Ice Block at 16 points and Cold Snap at 21, plus Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost for damage. Its 31 point talent is unnamed.

Best Builds by Scenario

Exact point layouts are not safe to publish yet: the beta kept moving Mage talents through 15 October. Each section says which way the evidence points and what to look for in the launch trees.

Solo Leveling

Blizzard has not named a best leveling spec. Classic leveling advice favored single target Frost for slows, control and safety, and Forever gives that some support: Frost has the most named early milestones, Frost Blast gives a slow at 24, and Ice Block at 16 points is a confirmed escape. Nobody has shown that Frost levels faster than Fire or Arcane.

What to look for:

  • A reliable slow. Train Frost Blast at 24 instead of using a low rank Frostbolt.
  • Current ranks. With the down-ranking penalty and reflowed ranks, keep every damage spell at its highest rank.
  • Less downtime. Conjured food and water is a Mage strength Blizzard named, and it saves gold and time.
  • Controlled pulls. Pull at range and Polymorph an extra enemy; a death costs the walk back.
  • No AoE plan built on Classic numbers. Large Blizzard and Cone of Cold pulls were weakened on purpose, so compare any AoE route with normal questing after counting deaths and competition.

Dungeon Damage

Which spec is best in dungeons is unknown. Blizzard lists Polymorph, food and water, and AoE damage as Mage strengths, and crowd control and threat still matter in Forever, so expect to Polymorph on dangerous pulls. Cone of Cold's bonus on its first four targets suits small packs better than huge ones.

Beta dungeons at the level 30 cap included Ragefire Chasm, The Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep, Gnomeregan and Scarlet Monastery, plus new dungeons such as Hall of Thanes and Excavation Site.

PvP

The best PvP spec is unknown. Look first at the defensive tools: Ice Block and Cold Snap in Frost, Polymorph for everyone, and Frost Blast for a slow. The beta notes say PvP crits are no longer reduced, which matters to crit heavy builds such as Fire. Forever's PvP has Honor, seasonal Rank Points with a weekly cap, and the new 15 versus 15 Darkspear Islands battleground for levels 30 to 60 (confirmed by Blizzard).

Raids

Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players and the Barrow Deeps for 10 players at maximum level (confirmed by Blizzard). The best raid spec is unknown. Frostfire Bolt counting as two schools may make hybrid builds useful, but no Forever raid encounter has been tested. Your leveling build does not need to be your raid build, and dual spec at 40 lets you keep both.

Blizzard has not said how many talent points you get per level. Third party tools assume one per level from 10, which would put the 16 point milestone at 25, the 21 point milestone at 30 and the 31 point milestone at 40. The Legacy perk Talented grants talent points up to five levels early (confirmed by Blizzard). Respecs cost 1 silver on the beta only; at launch the cost rises after the first reset and decays over time (seen in beta).

Races

Mage race options, from a third party race and class matrix that agrees with Blizzard's announcements:

  • Alliance: Human, Gnome and Skyborne (High Order).
  • Horde: Orc (new in Forever), Undead and Troll.

Skyborne is a new elf race from Zephras Isle, its starting zone for levels 1 to 12, and needs the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition (confirmed by Blizzard). Only Alliance Skyborne can be Mages.

Each race has two active and two passive racials, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value (confirmed by Blizzard). The 15 October beta notes list these, which may change at launch:

  • Human: Ruthless (+2% crit) and Will to Survive.
  • Gnome: Eureka!, an 8 second buff that makes mana, rage and energy abilities 10% cheaper.
  • Skyborne: Wind Blessed (+3% haste), Skysight, Read Leyline and Walk on Air.
  • Orc: Savage (+1% crit), Blood Fury on a 3 minute cooldown, Shatter Curse, which dispels Curses and Banes, and a passive that cuts magic damage taken by 5%.
  • Undead: Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep without granting immunity, and Cannibalize restores mana as well as health (both confirmed by Blizzard).
  • Troll: Regeneration is 20% stronger.

No source shows a race that changes Mage results, so pick the faction and look you want.

Professions That Fit

Our suggested pair for a Mage is Tailoring and Herbalism, and it still works as a starting plan. See the Mage professions section for more.

  • Camping makes both useful. Each profession has three campfire objects that give a one hour buff. The Tailor's Faction Banner gives Spirit and the Herbalist's Incense Candle gives Intellect (confirmed by Blizzard). The first objects come at profession skill 20, and these buffs do not stack with the matching class buffs.
  • Comprehension is yours alone. This Mage only minor tradeskill reads scrolls that creatures drop (confirmed by Blizzard).
  • Classic cooldowns are unverified. Mooncloth and the other Classic profession cooldowns and specializations have no Forever source yet, so do not plan a business around them.
  • Legacy can help. The Reagent Economy perk makes class reagents free (confirmed by Blizzard).

What We Do Not Know Yet

  • The 31 point talents for all three trees, the 11 and 21 point Fire talents, and the Arcane milestones other than Arcane Wrath.
  • Final talent layouts and numbers. Mage changed more after its deep dive than most classes.
  • Which spec is best for leveling, dungeons, PvP or raids.
  • What the Research system and the Scroll of Liminal Passage do.
  • Talent points per level, the respec gold cost and the riding gold cost.
  • How levels 31 to 60 play, since the beta stopped at 30.
  • Whether Mooncloth and the Classic profession specializations exist in Forever.

Item stats on our Forever database pages are Classic Era copies and are not reliable for Forever, since Blizzard reworked dungeon loot. Classic best in slot lists do not apply.

Forever is new, and we update this page as launch details are confirmed. For the wider picture, see the WoW Forever hub, the leveling guide and the Forever map, or read the Warlock and Druid guides.
