WoW Forever Shaman Guide: Builds, Roles and Leveling

The WoW Forever Shaman heals as Restoration, deals ranged damage as Elemental and melee damage as Enhancement, and can also tank small groups for a while. Learn what changed from Classic, which talent direction suits each role, and what is still unconfirmed.

Blizzard confirms all three roles. Which damage spec is stronger is unknown, and Shaman talents changed more than any other class after Blizzard's deep dive.

What Changed in Forever

Blizzard labels every class article "subject to change during the beta", which closes on 21 October.

  • Both factions have Shaman. Dwarf Shaman are new for the Alliance; Orc, Tauren, Troll and Skyborne Shaman play for the Horde. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Talent trees were redesigned. Talents start at level 10, with milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points and a new one at 16 points. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Totems were reworked. Totems have a 1 second global cooldown, buff totems last 5 minutes, a tracking display shows them, and resistance totems cover the whole raid. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • New totem tools. Totemic Recall arrives at 20 and Totemic Projection at 22. Preset totem sets come through Call of the Elements at 20, Call of the Spirits at 30 and Call of the Ancestors at 40. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Weapon imbues last 60 minutes and stack with weapon stones and oils. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Fire Nova is now a spell, replacing Fire Nova Totem; that is confirmed. Its damage and mana cost were then lowered, which is seen in beta.
  • Group totems got wider. Blizzard describes Windfury and Flametongue totems as party buffs; the 15 October beta notes make them, Grace of Air and Strength of Earth raid-wide. Windfury and Flametongue exclude each other, but Grace of Air no longer conflicts with either. Seen in beta, may change at launch.
  • Lightning spells changed. Lightning Bolt is a 2.5 second cast from rank 4, and Chain Lightning a 2 second cast costing 35 percent less mana. Lightning Bolt's ranks were reflowed so each is an upgrade, and down-ranking is penalized. Seen in beta.
  • Two-handed axes and maces are baseline. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Stats were merged. Spell and melee hit are one stat, as is crit, and bonus healing also grants one third as much bonus damage. Confirmed by Blizzard.

Specs and Roles

Elemental

Elemental, the Elemental Combat tree, is the ranged damage spec. Blizzard's deep dive had removed Elemental Mastery and placed Lava Burst at 31 points; the 15 October beta notes replaced that layout:

  • Elemental Alacrity moved to row 2.
  • Earthbound is the 16-point talent.
  • Lava Burst is the 21-point talent.
  • Elemental Mastery returned as the 31-point talent.
  • Call of Thunder was removed.

All of this is seen in beta and may change at launch. The Elemental 11-point talent is not named, and our sources do not describe what Earthbound, Lava Burst or Elemental Alacrity do. Read the tooltips in the launch build before you commit points.

Enhancement

Enhancement is the melee spec, and Blizzard says it can serve as a temporary tank in small groups. Its talents, confirmed by Blizzard, are Shamanistic Focus at 11 points, Stormstrike at 16 with an 8 second cooldown, Spirit Weapons at 21, which raises threat while Rockbiter is active, and Rage of the Far Seer at 31, a personal haste cooldown. Maelstrom Weapon, Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness are also in the tree. Whether Enhancement can dual wield is unknown.

Restoration

Restoration is the healing spec. Blizzard lists Water Shield at 11 points, Mana Tide at 16 (with ranks at levels 25, 38, 48 and 58), Riptide at 31 and Mindfulness. The 15 October beta notes moved Tidal Focus to row 1. The Restoration 21-point talent is not named.

Best Builds by Scenario

The Elemental tree changed six days before the beta closed, so no point layout here would be safe. Each scenario names the spec, the reason and what to look for.

Solo Leveling

The best leveling spec is unknown, and the Classic plan of "Enhancement, then Elemental at 40" cannot be confirmed. Blizzard moved Elemental Alacrity early so Elemental feels better while leveling, and Enhancement gained mana regeneration tools; both are seen in beta.

As Enhancement, use the best two-handed axe or mace you find, keep an imbue up, and add a stone or oil, since they now stack. Aim for Stormstrike at 16 points. Blizzard does not say which talents restore mana, so read the tooltips of Shamanistic Focus, Maelstrom Weapon, Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness.

As Elemental, aim for Elemental Alacrity in row 2, train each new Lightning Bolt rank, and budget for drinks.

Either way, keep a healing reserve, keep healing gear apart from damage gear, and do not respec into a caster build while you still wear melee equipment. Call of the Elements at 20 places a preset set, but totem mana costs are not given, so a short fight against one enemy may not justify a full set.

Dungeon Tanking

Blizzard calls Enhancement a "temporary tank" for small groups and announced no Shaman taunt. Spirit Weapons, the 21-point Enhancement talent, raises threat while Rockbiter is active. So Enhancement is a stand-in, not a main tank; for steady tanking, look to a Warrior, Paladin or Bear Druid.

Dungeon Healing

Restoration is the healing spec. Your first two milestones are Water Shield at 11 and Mana Tide at 16. Use current spell ranks because of the down-ranking penalty. Blizzard confirms crowd control and threat still matter in Forever dungeons; the Shaman has no effective crowd control, so let other players handle it. On the beta at level 30, open dungeons included Ragefire Chasm, Wailing Caverns, Shadowfang Keep, Razorfen Kraul and Uldaman.

Dungeon Damage

Which damage spec does more in dungeons is unknown. Chain Lightning's 2 second cast and lower mana cost help against packs, and the Fire Nova spell is an option, though its damage and mana cost were lowered on 15 October. Your group totems are a big part of your value: Windfury or Flametongue, plus Grace of Air and Strength of Earth, reach the whole group (seen in beta).

PvP

The best PvP spec is unknown. Blizzard names the Shaman's weakness as having no effective crowd control. Rage of the Far Seer gives Enhancement a personal haste cooldown, and PvP critical strikes are no longer reduced (seen in beta). Blizzard's new Honor gear adds Shaman healer, melee and caster sets. The 15 versus 15 Darkspear Islands battleground runs from level 30 to 60.

Raids

Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players and the Barrow Deeps for 10, both confirmed. The best raid spec is unknown. Raid-wide totems (seen in beta) are clear utility, resistance totems cover the whole raid, and Blizzard lowered Battle Shout because both factions now have Paladin and Shaman buffs.

Talent levels assume one point per level from 10, which third-party tools describe but Blizzard has not confirmed; Mana Tide's first rank at 25 fits that pattern. The Legacy perk Talented grants talent points up to five levels early. Dual specialization at 40 lets you keep a damage spec for questing and Restoration for groups.

Races

Shaman races are confirmed by Blizzard.

FactionRaces
AllianceDwarf
HordeOrc, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Alliance Skyborne cannot be Shaman. Blizzard confirms two active and two passive racials per race, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value. These details are from the 15 October beta build:

  • Dwarf: Earth Fury, 2 percent crit damage and healing; Stoneform now reduces physical damage; Find Treasure; Big Game Hunter adds damage against beasts.
  • Orc: Savage, 1 percent crit; Blood Fury on a 3 minute cooldown; Shatter Curse dispels Curses and Banes; 5 percent less magic damage taken.
  • Tauren: Endurance, 2 percent crit damage and healing; Plainsrunning, 3 percent mounted speed; Cultivation gathers herbs on a 15 minute cooldown; War Stomp on a 90 second cooldown.
  • Troll: Regeneration increased by 20 percent.
  • Skyborne: Wind Blessed, 3 percent haste; Skysight; Read Leyline; Walk on Air on a 90 second cooldown.

Skyborne need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition and start on Zephras Isle for levels 1 to 12. The classic starting zones remain, including Dun Morogh, Durotar and Mulgore. Which race is best is unknown.

Professions That Fit

Leatherworking and Skinning remain a sensible Shaman pairing: skin your quest kills and turn the leather into gear or sales. Whether Forever keeps the Tribal specialization is unknown. Advanced Leatherworking recipes require a Tanning Rack placed at your camp, some Leatherworking recipes drop at random in dungeons, and a corpse can be skinned only once, so only one skinner profits from each kill. The rack is confirmed; the rest is seen in beta.

A Tauren's Cultivation racial gathers herbs, which makes Herbalism a natural alternative. Raising a crafting profession to 150 unlocks Legacy. See the Shaman profession plan and the WoW Forever Leveling Guide.
