WoW Forever Paladin Guide: Builds, Roles and Leveling

Play a WoW Forever Paladin as a Holy healer, a Protection tank or a Retribution damage dealer: what changed from Classic, the builds, races and professions. The Paladin had the latest of Blizzard's class deep dives, in mid October, and more tuning on 15 October, so we mark what is confirmed, what was only seen in beta and what is still unknown.

Forever launches on 4 November 2026. Blizzard labels every class detail "subject to change during the beta".

What Changed in Forever

Blizzard calls Forever "not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic" (confirmed). The Paladin is one of the clearest examples: several pieces of Classic Paladin advice are now wrong.

Factions

  • Undead can now be Paladins, so the Horde has Paladins (confirmed).

New baseline abilities

  • Holy Strike, learned at level 6, is an instant Holy weapon strike on a 10 second cooldown, and Improved Holy Strike was folded into it (seen in beta on 24 September, may change).
  • Seal of Fury is learned at 10, with rank 3 at 26. It suits fast weapons, adds an absorb shield, and its Judgement taunts at 10 yards, against 5 yards for a Warrior's Taunt (confirmed).
  • Consecration is baseline at level 20, but deals full damage only to the first four targets (confirmed).
  • Judgement no longer consumes your Seal (confirmed).
  • Blessing of Kings is baseline (confirmed).

Other class changes

  • Lay on Hands has a 20 minute cooldown (confirmed).
  • Resistance auras are raid-wide (confirmed).
  • Seal twisting is no longer baseline; it returns only through Twist of Light, the Retribution 31 point talent (confirmed).
  • Salvation and Mass Salvation no longer replace a Blessing, and Revoke removes them (seen in beta on 15 October).
  • Righteous Fury sets Holy threat at 90%. It dropped to 60% on 24 September and went back up on 15 October (seen in beta, may change again).

Talents, stats and items

  • Talents start at level 10, with one point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree; the 16 point milestone is new (confirmed).
  • Bonus healing also grants one third as much bonus damage, and caster weapons carry spell damage and healing (confirmed).
  • Spell, melee and ranged hit are one stat, and so is critical strike (confirmed).
  • Spells far below your level get less benefit from spell power (seen in beta; confirmed in principle), so heavy down-ranking costs you healing.
  • Every dungeon drop was re-examined, so Classic best-in-slot lists do not apply (confirmed).

Specs and Roles

Holy

Holy is the healing spec, and Blizzard calls Paladins the strongest single target healers (confirmed). Its milestone talents are Voice of Truth at 11 points, Divine Favor at 16, Holy Shock at 21 with a 10 second cooldown, and Light's Vigil at 31. Infusion of Light, Reverence and Divine Precision are also in the tree. Blizzard also names a Holy damage "Shockadin" option built around Holy Shock (confirmed).

Protection

Protection is the tank spec. Its milestones are Improved Seal of Fury at 11 points, Swift Judgement at 16, which resets the Seal of Fury taunt, and Templar's Bulwark at 21, which Holy Shield now requires. As of the 15 October beta notes, Reckoning stores up to four charges and triggers on blocks, Shield Specialization returns 4% mana on a block, and Blessing of Sanctuary was removed (seen in beta, may change). The Protection 31 point talent is not named in any source we trust.

Retribution

Retribution is melee damage. Sacred Arbiter, the 16 point talent, makes Holy Strike refresh every Judgement on the target. Repentance sits at 21 points and Twist of Light at 31. Vengeance and Instrument of Law are in the tree, and Champion of the Light turns 10, 20 or 30% of your Intellect into spell damage (seen in beta on 15 October).

Best Builds by Scenario

No source ranks the Paladin specs for leveling, PvP or raids, and the trees were tuned again on 15 October. This section says which spec suits each job and what to look for, not a point by point layout.

Solo Leveling

Best spec: unknown. Holy Strike at 6 (seen in beta) and baseline Consecration at 20 (confirmed) raise damage for every spec, so a Paladin no longer needs a particular tree to have an area attack while questing. Retribution is the damage spec and our earlier Classic plan used it for solo play, but no source compares it with the others in Forever. Look for talents that add damage per Judgement and Holy Strike, and mana return. Keep a shield and healing gear in your bags if you plan to join groups.

Dungeon Tanking

Spec: Protection (confirmed). The Classic advice to take 11 Holy points for Consecration before tanking is no longer needed, because Consecration is baseline, and Holy Shield now sits behind Templar's Bulwark in Protection. Your taunt is the Judgement of Seal of Fury at 10 yards, and Swift Judgement resets it. Consecration deals full damage only to four targets, so watch threat on larger pulls. Look for talents that build threat with Seal of Fury, Reckoning charges from blocks, and mana from blocks.

Dungeon Healing

Spec: Holy (confirmed role). Blizzard's "strongest single target healer" description suits tank healing. Look for Divine Favor at 16 and Holy Shock at 21, and pair Intellect gear with your best healing ranks rather than down-ranked spells. Carry drinks and keep separate healing pieces from your damage set, as our Classic guide advised.

Dungeon Damage

Spec: Retribution or a Holy Shock hybrid. Which is better is unknown. Retribution wants Sacred Arbiter for its Judgement upkeep. A Holy damage build leans on Holy Shock and the rule that bonus healing also adds damage.

PvP

Best spec: unknown. Blizzard names the Paladin's PvP weaknesses: no interrupt and no slow (confirmed). PvP critical hits are no longer reduced (seen in beta). Dual specialization at 40 lets you keep a PvP spec beside your leveling or group spec. Darkspear Islands, the new 15v15 battleground, is open from level 30 to 60 (confirmed).

Raids

Best spec: unknown. Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players with 13 bosses and the Barrow Deeps for 10 players with 8 bosses (confirmed). Blizzard calls out Sacred Arbiter keeping several Judgements up as raid utility (confirmed), and raid-wide resistance auras help every group. Choose your raid spec once the launch trees and encounters are known.

Milestone talents depend on points in one tree. Third-party tools assume one point per level from 10, which would put Divine Favor or Swift Judgement at about level 25 and the 21 point talents at about 30 if you stay in one tree. Blizzard has not confirmed the points per level. The Legacy perk Talented grants talent points up to five levels early (confirmed). Respecs cost "much higher" after the first reset and decay back over time (seen in beta), and riding gold costs are unknown.

Classic dungeons seen open on the beta at level 30 include Ragefire Chasm, Wailing Caverns, The Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep, Gnomeregan and Scarlet Monastery. Only the Excavation Site, one of nine new dungeons, has an official level range, 26 to 31 (seen in beta). Routes are in the WoW Forever Leveling Guide and the Forever leveling index.

Races

Paladins are available to three races. This list comes from a third-party matrix that matches Blizzard's announcements (seen in beta). Skyborne cannot be a Paladin; its classes are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid, plus Shaman or Mage by faction (confirmed).

FactionPaladin Races
AllianceHuman, Dwarf
HordeUndead (new)

Undead Paladins have their own Forsaken paladin storyline at Bandarion Keep in Tirisfal Glades. That storyline is reported only by an unofficial atlas, though the beta notes confirm Bandarion Keep's quest levels were raised on 8 October.

Each race has two active and two passive racials, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value (confirmed). The details below are from the 15 October beta notes unless marked, so they may change.

  • Human: Ruthless (+2% critical strike chance) replaces Sword Specialization; Will to Survive.
  • Dwarf: Earth Fury (+2% critical damage and healing) replaces Mace Specialization. Stoneform now reduces physical damage instead of adding armor (confirmed).
  • Undead: Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep but grants no immunity, and Cannibalize restores mana as well as health (both confirmed). Touch of the Grave has a damage proc, Touch of the Dead.

Professions That Fit

Our original Classic plan paired Alchemy with Herbalism, because consumables and herbs help in every role. That still makes sense in Forever, with some new reasons and some open questions.

  • Herbalism builds a campfire Incense Candle that gives an Intellect buff (confirmed), useful to Holy Paladins. Camp buffs do not stack with the matching class buffs.
  • Alchemy lets you place an Alchemy Lab at your camp (confirmed). Classic transmute cooldowns are unverified for Forever.
  • Blacksmithing builds a Sharpening Wheel for an attack power buff (confirmed), which suits Retribution and Protection.

Forever adds more than 600 new recipes, Camping and two new trade factions (confirmed); their currency, Merchant's Favor, was seen in beta. See the Paladin profession plan.
