WoW Forever Hunter Guide: Builds, Roles and Leveling

Play a WoW Forever Hunter as a Beast Mastery, Marksmanship or Survival damage dealer: what changed from Classic, builds by scenario, races and professions. The Hunter has one of Blizzard's most detailed class deep dives and only small later changes, so this is among the better documented Forever classes. We still mark what is confirmed, what was only seen in beta and what is unknown.

Damage is the Hunter's only role, though the pet can tank while you solo and in small groups (confirmed). Forever launches on 4 November 2026, and Blizzard labels every class detail "subject to change during the beta".

What Changed in Forever

Blizzard calls Forever "not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic" (confirmed). For the Hunter, these changes matter most.

Shots and traps

  • Aimed Shot is baseline at level 20 and shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot (confirmed).
  • Traps can be used in combat on a 30 second cooldown. One fire trap and one frost trap can be active at a time, and fire traps scale with attack power (deep dive and 15 October beta notes; may change).
  • Auto Shot needs you to stand still for 0.5 seconds, and an option switches automatically between melee auto attack and Auto Shot (seen in beta on 15 October).
  • Disengage drops twice as much threat as before (confirmed).

Pets

  • Pets scale with the Hunter's gear and cannot take player stat buffs (confirmed).
  • Every pet family has a unique ability, and Foxes are a new family (confirmed).
  • Several pet abilities were weakened on 15 October (seen in beta, may change).

Talents

  • Talents start at level 10. One point milestone talents sit at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree; the 16 point milestone is new (confirmed).
  • Intimidation now requires Bestial Swiftness (confirmed).
  • Wyvern Sting was removed (confirmed).
  • Trueshot Aura is a raid-wide buff (seen in beta on 15 October).

Races, stats and items

  • Human Hunters are new, and Skyborne can be Hunters on either faction (confirmed).
  • Melee, ranged and spell hit are one stat, and so is critical strike (confirmed).
  • Every dungeon drop was re-examined, so Classic best-in-slot lists do not apply (confirmed).

Specs and Roles

Beast Mastery

Beast Mastery is ranged damage built around the pet. Its 16 point talent is Summon Hawk, and Focused Fire is in the tree. Intimidation now requires Bestial Swiftness (confirmed). The Beast Mastery 11, 21 and 31 point talents are not named in Blizzard's deep dive, so the shape of a full build is still unknown.

Marksmanship

Marksmanship is ranged damage with a no pet option. Lone Wolf, the 11 point talent, gives 20% more damage when you have no pet out. Trueshot Aura sits at 21 points and is now raid-wide. Sniper Shot, the 31 point talent, has a 45 yard range and a 4 second cast (confirmed; the raid-wide aura was seen in beta).

Survival

Survival covers traps and melee or hybrid play. Its milestones are Counterattack at 16 points, Strider Kick at 21 and Lacerating Strikes at 31. Predator's Edge allows dual wielding, and Expose Prey and Resourcefulness are also in the tree (confirmed). Our sources do not describe every one of these talents, so read their launch tooltips before you build around them.

Best Builds by Scenario

No source ranks the Hunter specs for any activity. This section says which spec suits each job and what to look for, not a point by point layout.

Solo Leveling

Best spec: unknown. The pet still tanks while you solo (confirmed), which is the core of the Classic Beast Mastery leveling plan our earlier guide used. Marksmanship's Lone Wolf offers a no pet route instead. Because pets scale with your gear, your own upgrades should lift your pet too, but player stat buffs no longer reach it.

Our Classic habits still hold: let the pet build threat before you open, heal it between pulls, and call it back before it drags in an extra enemy. Plan for the new Auto Shot rule: stand still for half a second before each shot. Respawn rates were raised in many zones (seen in beta), so choose resting spots with care.

Dungeon Damage

Spec: any. Which is best is unknown. Control matters: Blizzard confirms that crowd control and threat still count in Forever dungeons, and traps now work in combat, so a frost trap is a real tool on a messy pull. Disengage now drops twice as much threat. If a tank is present, keep your pet from taunting enemies off them; whether pet Growl itself changed was not mentioned.

PvP

Best spec: unknown. Blizzard names the Hunter's PvP weaknesses: an 8 yard dead zone, no stun or interrupt, and traps that can only be placed at your own feet (confirmed). Sniper Shot's 45 yard range and Survival's melee tools may help, but nothing has been tested at launch. PvP critical hits are no longer reduced (seen in beta). Darkspear Islands, the new 15v15 battleground, is open from level 30 to 60 (confirmed), and dual specialization at 40 lets you keep a PvP spec beside your leveling spec.

Raids

Best spec: unknown. Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players with 13 bosses and the Barrow Deeps for 10 players with 8 bosses (confirmed). Onyxia is present, because defeating her is a Legacy challenge (confirmed). A raid-wide Trueshot Aura is useful utility (seen in beta), which gives Marksmanship a clear raid case, but no source says it is the best raid spec.

Milestone talents depend on points in one tree. Third-party tools assume one point per level from 10, which would put Lone Wolf at about level 20, the 16 point talents at about 25 and Trueshot Aura at about 30 if you stay in one tree. Blizzard has not confirmed the points per level. The Legacy perk Talented grants talent points up to five levels early (confirmed). Respecs cost "much higher" after the first reset and decay back over time (seen in beta), and riding gold costs are unknown.

Dungeon mob XP was raised by about 20% and the extra XP from dungeon quests was halved (seen in beta). Classic dungeons seen open on the beta at level 30 include Wailing Caverns, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps, Razorfen Kraul, Scarlet Monastery, Razorfen Downs and Uldaman. Routes are in the WoW Forever Leveling Guide and the Forever leveling index.

Races

This list comes from a third-party matrix that matches Blizzard's announcements (seen in beta). Skyborne needs the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition, and you choose its faction at character creation (confirmed).

FactionHunter Races
AllianceHuman (new), Dwarf, Night Elf, Skyborne (High Order)
HordeOrc, Tauren, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Each race has two active and two passive racials, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value (confirmed). The details below are from the 15 October beta notes unless marked, so they may change.

  • Human: Ruthless (+2% critical strike chance); Will to Survive.
  • Dwarf: Big Game Hunter adds damage against beasts, Find Treasure runs alongside other tracking, and Stoneform now reduces physical damage (all confirmed). Earth Fury adds 2% critical damage and healing.
  • Night Elf: Quickness stacks with other speed effects; Wisp Form.
  • Orc: Savage (+1% critical strike chance); Blood Fury on a 3 minute cooldown; the passive cuts magic damage taken by 5%.
  • Tauren: Endurance (+2% critical damage and healing); Plainsrunning; Cultivation, a herb gathering racial; War Stomp on a 90 second cooldown.
  • Troll: Regeneration is 20% stronger.
  • Skyborne: Wind Blessed (+3% haste); Skysight; Read Leyline; Walk on Air on a 90 second cooldown.

Professions That Fit

Our original Classic plan paired Mining with Skinning for outdoor routes rich in beasts and ore. That still works as a starting plan, with a few Forever changes to weigh.

  • Skinning: a corpse can be skinned only once (seen in beta).
  • Mining: expect fewer poor copper veins in the starting areas (seen in beta).
  • Leatherworking: Leatherworkers place a Tanning Rack at camp, which advanced Leatherworking recipes require (confirmed), and some recipes drop at random in dungeons (seen in beta).
  • Tracking: under Classic rules, a gathering tracker replaced Hunter tracking. Dwarf Find Treasure now runs alongside other tracking (confirmed), but whether Find Minerals or Find Herbs do is unknown, so test it in game.

Forever adds more than 600 new recipes, Camping and two new trade factions (confirmed); their currency, Merchant's Favor, was seen in beta. Farming on a Hunter stays optional whenever another character earns more per hour. See the Hunter profession plan.
