WoW Forever Rogue Guide: Builds, Roles and Leveling

The WoW Forever Rogue fills one role, melee damage, via Assassination, Combat and Subtlety. Here is what changed from Classic and which spec fits each job. We also cover solo play, dungeons, PvP and raids, and what is still unconfirmed before launch on 4 November 2026.

Rogue at a Glance

SpecRoleBest ScenariosVerdict
AssassinationMelee damageDungeons once you hold two good daggers; solo, raid and PvP fit unknownA poison spec whose 21-point Mutilate needs a dagger in each hand
CombatMelee damageLeveling and dungeons with whatever weapon drops; raid and PvP fit unknownThe most weapon flexible spec, but its 21- and 31-point talents are unnamed
SubtletyMelee damageStealth openers and tricks, solo or in PvP; raid fit unknownA stealth and bleed kit built on Premeditation and Thousand Cuts

Blizzard has confirmed that Rogues cannot tank or heal, and says they have the highest single-target melee damage potential. No source ranks the three specs yet, so the table shows where each toolkit points, not a tested result.

What Changed in Forever

Blizzard labels every class article "subject to change during the beta", which closes on 21 October.

  • Talent trees were redesigned. Talents start at level 10. One-point milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new milestone at 16 points. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Weapon specializations were merged. Combat's Hack and Slash replaces the separate weapon specialization talents, so Sword Specialization no longer exists. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • One-handed axes are usable. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Poisons have more charges and now stack with weapon stones and oils. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth, and Distract lowers enemies' stealth detection. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Expose Armor now equals five applications of Sunder Armor and no longer blocks Sunder Armor. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Feint's threat drop was doubled. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Setup and Initiative reach their full 100 percent at three points. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Stats were merged. Melee, ranged and spell hit are one stat, and so is crit. A new stat lowers the target's chance to dodge and parry, and weapon skill on items is smaller. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Loot was reworked. Every dungeon drop was re-examined and hundreds of items were added, so Classic best-in-slot lists do not apply. Confirmed by Blizzard.
  • Weapon racials were replaced. Human Sword Specialization became Ruthless, Dwarf Mace Specialization became Earth Fury and Orc Axe Specialization became Savage. Seen in beta, may change at launch.
  • Respecs cost more after the first reset, then the cost decays over time. Seen in beta, may change at launch.

Specs and Roles

Assassination

Assassination is the poison and dagger tree. Cold Blood is its 16-point talent, Mutilate its 21-point talent and Venom, a poison finisher, its 31-point talent. Improved Poisons is also in the tree. All of this is confirmed by Blizzard. Mutilate requires a dagger in both hands, so this spec asks you to collect two daggers rather than one strong weapon. What Cold Blood does in Forever is not described in our sources; read its tooltip before you plan around it.

Combat

Combat works with any weapon and supports either Backstab or Sinister Strike builds. Flawless Execution is its 16-point talent, and Hack and Slash replaces the old weapon specializations. Both are confirmed by Blizzard. The Combat 21-point and 31-point talents are not named in any source we have, and which weapon types Hack and Slash covers is not stated; check its tooltip.

Subtlety

Subtlety is the stealth, tricks and bleed tree. Premeditation is its 16-point talent and Thousand Cuts its 31-point talent, with Quietus, Cutthroat and Dirty Tricks along the way. Setup and Initiative now reach 100 percent at three points each. All of this is confirmed by Blizzard, but what these talents do in detail is not given in our sources.

Best Builds by Scenario

The beta kept moving talents up to 15 October and several Rogue milestones are unnamed, so a point-by-point layout would be a guess. Each scenario says which spec fits and what to look for.

Solo Leveling

Which spec levels fastest is unknown. The Classic advice of "Combat swords" is out of date, because Sword Specialization is gone and Hack and Slash replaced the separate weapon talents. So use the strongest weapon you have, not a weak one kept for its talent.

Combat is the safest starting direction because it accepts any weapon and either a Backstab or a Sinister Strike build. Assassination makes sense once you hold two good daggers. With your first 10 points, look for talents that raise the damage of the combo point builder you actually use or help you survive, and aim for your tree's 11-point milestone.

Blizzard says an ordinary solo enemy should take about 10 to 15 seconds to kill. Pull one enemy at a time, carry food, and use both a poison and a weapon stone or oil, now that they stack.

Dungeon Damage

Any spec can do dungeon damage, and Blizzard calls Rogues the class with the highest single-target melee damage potential. Which spec does the most is unknown. Blizzard confirms crowd control and threat still matter in dungeons, and three changes help:

  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth, so you can control one enemy in a pack and still open from stealth.
  • Feint drops twice as much threat, which gives you more room on long boss fights.
  • Expose Armor no longer blocks Sunder Armor, so agree with your tank before you use it. Tanks in Forever include Warriors, Paladins and Bear Druids.

On the beta at level 30, the open dungeons included Ragefire Chasm, Wailing Caverns, The Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep, Scarlet Monastery and the new Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron. Dungeon enemies also give about 20 percent more experience than before. Both are seen in beta and may change at launch.

PvP

Which spec is best for PvP is unknown. Subtlety has the clearest PvP toolkit on paper, with Premeditation, Dirty Tricks, and Setup and Initiative at 100 percent. Every spec gains from Sap no longer breaking Stealth and from Distract lowering stealth detection, both confirmed by Blizzard. In the beta, PvP critical strikes are no longer reduced.

Forever's PvP has Honor to buy a blue gear set, rank-gated seals to upgrade it to epic, a weekly rank cap and seasons, all confirmed by Blizzard. The new 15 versus 15 Darkspear Islands battleground opens from level 30. If world PvP is your goal, choose the PvP ruleset; the Normal ruleset allows PvP only by mutual consent.

Raids

Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players with 13 bosses and the Barrow Deeps for 10 players with 8 bosses, both confirmed. Onyxia is also present. The best raid spec is unknown. When raid gear and logs appear, look for three things: how much of the merged hit stat you need, how the new stat that lowers dodge and parry compares with hit, and whether your raid wants your Expose Armor alongside a Warrior's Sunder Armor.

Leveling Milestones

The talent levels assume one point per level from 10, which third-party tools describe but Blizzard has not confirmed. The Legacy perk Talented, confirmed by Blizzard, grants talent points up to five levels early. Dual specialization at 40 lets you keep a leveling build and a dungeon build side by side.

Races

This list comes from a third-party race and class table that matches Blizzard's announcements, so treat it as seen in beta. Skyborne Rogues on both factions are confirmed by Blizzard.

FactionRaces
AllianceHuman, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Skyborne (High Order)
HordeOrc, Undead, Troll, Skyborne (Windshaper)

Blizzard has confirmed that every race has two active and two passive racials, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value. These details are from the 15 October beta build:

  • Human: Ruthless, 2 percent crit, replaces Sword Specialization; Will to Survive.
  • Dwarf: Earth Fury, 2 percent crit damage and healing, replaces Mace Specialization; Stoneform now reduces physical damage; Find Treasure can find extra chest loot.
  • Night Elf: Quickness now stacks with other speed effects; Wisp Form.
  • Gnome: Eureka!, an 8 second buff that makes energy abilities 10 percent cheaper.
  • Skyborne: Wind Blessed, 3 percent haste; Skysight; Read Leyline; Walk on Air on a 90 second cooldown.
  • Orc: Savage, 1 percent crit, replaces Axe Specialization; Blood Fury on a 3 minute cooldown; Shatter Curse; 5 percent less magic damage taken.
  • Undead: Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep but gives no immunity; Cannibalize restores mana as well as health.
  • Troll: Regeneration increased by 20 percent.

Skyborne need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition and start on Zephras Isle for levels 1 to 12. The other races start in the classic zones, such as Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Teldrassil, Durotar and Tirisfal Glades. Which race is best for a Rogue is unknown.

Professions That Fit

Engineering and Mining remain a sensible Rogue pairing: Mining earns money along your quest route, and Engineering gives personal combat tools. Engineering is a utility cost first, so choose the devices you will actually use. Whether Forever keeps Classic's Engineering specializations is unknown, so do not plan around them yet.

Poisons now stack with weapon stones and oils, so stones are worth carrying. In Camping, a Blacksmith's Sharpening Wheel gives an attack power buff, though camp buffs do not stack with the matching class buffs. Some Blacksmithing and Leatherworking recipes now drop at random in dungeons (seen in beta). Raising a crafting profession to 150 also unlocks Legacy. See the Rogue profession plan and the WoW Forever Leveling Guide for routes.
