Priest at a Glance
| Spec | Role | Best Scenarios | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discipline | Healer, with absorbs | Dungeon and raid healing; solo and PvP fit unknown | Penance at 21 points leads a tree reshuffled on 15 October |
| Holy | Healer | Dungeon and raid healing; solo and PvP fit unknown | Binding Heal at 16 and Prayer of Mending at 31; Lightwell is gone |
| Shadow | Ranged damage | Dungeon damage and the only damage spec for solo play; raid and PvP fit unknown | Vampiric Embrace at 16, but Shadowform's slot is not stated |
Blizzard calls the Priest the most versatile healer in Forever, and confirms the class cannot tank. Which healing spec is stronger is unknown, and no source ranks Shadow against other damage specs.
What Changed in Forever
Blizzard labels every class article "subject to change during the beta", which closes on 21 October. The Priest trees were reshuffled as late as 15 October, so this class carries more uncertainty than most.
- Talent trees were redesigned. Talents start at level 10. Milestone talents sit at 11, 21 and 31 points, plus a new milestone at 16 points. Confirmed by Blizzard.
- Divine Spirit is baseline at level 30. Buff talents became baseline across classes. Confirmed by Blizzard.
- Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are available to all Priest races at level 20, and Devouring Plague has a 24 second cooldown. Seen in beta, may change at launch.
- Shadow Word: Death is baseline at level 32 with an 18 second cooldown. Seen in beta, may change at launch.
- Prayer of Healing heals the target's party, and Renews from several Priests can stack on one target. Confirmed by Blizzard.
- Racial Priest spells were revised, with new Gnome spells. Confirmed by Blizzard, though our sources do not name the new spells.
- Fade's threat drop was doubled. Confirmed by Blizzard.
- Lightwell was removed. Confirmed by Blizzard.
- Wands changed. They get no bonus from spell damage and need you to stand still for half a second. Seen in beta, may change at launch.
- Down-ranking is penalized. Spells far below your level get less benefit from spell power. Spell ranks, including Smite, Lesser Heal and Heal, were reflowed so each new rank is an upgrade. Seen in beta; Blizzard confirmed the penalty in principle.
- Stats were merged. Spell, melee and ranged hit are one stat, and so is crit. Bonus healing also grants one third as much bonus damage, and caster weapons carry both. Confirmed by Blizzard.
- Gnome Priests are new. Confirmed by Blizzard.
Specs and Roles
Discipline
Discipline is the absorb healer. As of the 15 October beta notes, Soul Warding is its 16-point talent and Penance its 21-point talent, with Divine Aegis, Twin Disciplines and Power in Light in the tree and Mental Strength moved to row 2. That is seen in beta and may change at launch. The Discipline 11-point and 31-point talents are not named in our sources.
Holy
Holy is the direct healer. Binding Heal is its 16-point talent and Prayer of Mending its 31-point talent, with Litany of Light in the tree. Lightwell was removed. These are confirmed by Blizzard. The Holy 11-point and 21-point talents are not named.
Shadow
Shadow is the damage spec. Vampiric Embrace is its 16-point talent, confirmed by Blizzard, and the 15 October beta notes give it a 30 second cooldown. The same notes list these changes, seen in beta:
- Shadow Weaving now benefits only the caster.
- Devouring Contagion jumps to two targets.
- Dark Inspiration is new and gives your party Spirit.
- Improved Mind Flay ramps up over time.
- Shadowform allows all non-healing spells.
The Shadow 11-, 21- and 31-point talents are not named, and no source states where Shadowform sits in the tree.
Best Builds by Scenario
The trees moved up to 15 October and seven Priest milestones are unnamed, so this page gives directions, not point layouts.
Solo Leveling
The best leveling spec is unknown. The Classic plan of "wand and Spirit Tap, then Shadow around 40" cannot be confirmed: our sources do not mention Spirit Tap, and wands no longer gain from spell damage and need you to stand still before they fire.
Shadow is the only damage spec, so it is the natural direction for questing. In the Shadow tree, look first for talents that raise your main damage spells or restore health and mana between pulls, and aim for Vampiric Embrace at 16 points. Every Priest also gains damage tools as they level: Devouring Plague at 20 and Shadow Word: Death at 32, both seen in beta.
Because of the down-ranking penalty, train each new rank of the spells you use rather than relying on low ranks. Keep your useful healing spells trained, carry drinks even when solo sustain feels strong, and keep healing gear apart from damage gear. Dual specialization at 40 lets you keep a Shadow build for questing and a healing build for groups.
Dungeon Healing
Discipline and Holy both heal dungeons, and which is better is unknown. Look for these when you choose:
- Discipline if you like preventing damage with absorbs; Penance at 21 is the clearest milestone (seen in beta).
- Holy if you prefer direct and group healing; Binding Heal at 16 and Prayer of Mending at 31 are confirmed.
In a five player group, Prayer of Healing covers the whole party because it heals the target's party. Fade drops twice the threat it used to, which helps when a pull goes wrong, and Blizzard confirms crowd control and threat still matter in Forever dungeons. Bonus healing gear also adds some damage, so a healing set is less helpless when soloing between runs.
On the beta at level 30, open dungeons included Wailing Caverns, The Deadmines, The Stockade, Blackfathom Deeps and Scarlet Monastery. You will often heal for a Warrior, Paladin or Bear Druid tank.
Dungeon Damage
Shadow is the damage spec, a role Blizzard confirms. Shadow Weaving now helps only you rather than other Shadow casters, Devouring Contagion reaches two targets, and Dark Inspiration gives your party Spirit, all seen in beta. Where Shadowform sits, and so how many points it takes, is unknown.
PvP
The best PvP spec is unknown. Blizzard names the Priest's weaknesses as cloth armor and few escapes. Fear Ward for every Priest race at 20 and Shadow Word: Death at 32 add tools, and PvP critical strikes are no longer reduced; all three are seen in beta.
Forever's Honor buys a blue gear set, rank-gated seals upgrade it to epic, ranks have a weekly cap, and seasons add weekly tasks, all confirmed by Blizzard. The 15 versus 15 Darkspear Islands battleground runs from level 30 to 60.
Raids
Raids open on 9 December 2026: Hyjal Summit for 20 players and the Barrow Deeps for 10, both confirmed, with Onyxia also present. The best raid spec is unknown. Two confirmed changes favor several Priests in one raid: Renews from different Priests stack on one target, and Prayer of Healing heals whichever party its target is in. Divine Spirit is baseline, so every Priest brings it.
Leveling Milestones
| Level | Milestone | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Talents begin | Confirmed |
| 20 | 11-point talent, if points arrive one per level (all three unnamed) | Points per level not confirmed |
| 20 | Fear Ward and Devouring Plague for every Priest race | Seen in beta |
| 25 | 16-point talents: Soul Warding, Binding Heal or Vampiric Embrace | Talents confirmed or seen in beta; level inferred |
| 25 | Your first character to 25 unlocks the Legacy system | Confirmed |
| 30 | 21-point talent: Penance; Holy and Shadow unnamed | Seen in beta; level inferred |
| 30 | Divine Spirit baseline; Darkspear Islands opens | Confirmed |
| 32 | Shadow Word: Death | Seen in beta |
| 40 | 31-point talent: Prayer of Mending; Discipline and Shadow unnamed | Confirmed; level inferred |
| 40 | Dual specialization; riding, with a mount granted when you train | Dual spec and mount model confirmed; riding level datamined |
| 60 | Level cap | Confirmed |
Talent levels assume one point per level from 10, which third-party tools describe but Blizzard has not confirmed. The Legacy perk Talented, confirmed by Blizzard, grants talent points up to five levels early. Riding gold costs are unknown.
Races
This list comes from a third-party race and class table that matches Blizzard's announcements, so treat it as seen in beta. The Gnome Priest is confirmed by Blizzard.
| Faction | Races |
|---|---|
| Alliance | Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome |
| Horde | Undead, Troll |
Skyborne, Orc and Tauren cannot be Priests. Blizzard has confirmed that every race has two active and two passive racials, rebalanced to roughly equal offensive value. These details are from the 15 October beta build:
- Human: Ruthless, 2 percent crit; Will to Survive.
- Dwarf: Earth Fury, 2 percent crit damage and healing; Stoneform now reduces physical damage; Find Treasure.
- Night Elf: Quickness stacks with other speed effects; Wisp Form.
- Gnome: Eureka!, an 8 second buff that makes mana abilities 10 percent cheaper.
- Undead: Will of the Forsaken removes Charm, Fear and Sleep but gives no immunity; Cannibalize restores mana as well as health; Touch of the Grave has a damage proc.
- Troll: Regeneration increased by 20 percent.
Racial Priest spells were also revised, but our sources do not list them. The classic starting zones remain, including Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Teldrassil, Tirisfal Glades and Durotar. Which race is best is unknown.
Professions That Fit
Tailoring and Herbalism remain a sensible Priest pairing: gather herbs along your quest route, and use cloth for bags and personal crafts. Whether Classic's Mooncloth cooldown exists in Forever is unknown, so do not buy into it yet.
Camping adds a twist. A Tailor's Faction Banner gives a Spirit buff and an Herbalist's Incense Candle an Intellect buff, both caster stats. Camp buffs do not stack with the matching class buffs, so our reading is that the Banner adds little where Divine Spirit is already up. Raising a crafting profession to 150 unlocks Legacy, and crafted food can give a small experience bonus. See the Priest profession plan and the WoW Forever Leveling Guide.
What We Do Not Know Yet
- The Discipline 11- and 31-point talents, the Holy 11- and 21-point talents and all three Shadow milestones.
- Where Shadowform sits, and whether Spirit Tap and Wand Specialization keep a place in the trees.
- Which healing spec is stronger, and the best spec for leveling, PvP or raids.
- The revised racial Priest spells and the new Gnome spells.
- Whether resurrection changed; Blizzard did not mention it.
- Whether talent points arrive one per level, the real respec cost and riding gold costs.
- Whether profession cooldowns such as Mooncloth exist.
